Less Than 6 Months To Go
2020 – it’s an Olympic Year! So if, like some of our clients, you’ve been inspired to run the Hackney Half Marathon on May 17th next year, here’s our best Hackney Half Marathon training tips.
Tip 1: Don’t Overtrain
Providing you’re sticking to the plan you’ll feel great in the weeks leading up to the half, but don’t get carried away and think ‘Wow, I can run so far!’. If your plan says 6 miles, do not go 9. You could just be setting yourself up for aches, pains and potential injuries. Trust the plan and it’ll be good to you. If you’re not signing up to Personal Training with us, check out this great 20 week training plan.
Tip 2: Run At Least 10 Miles In Advance
You’ll need to familiarise yourself with running long distances, so as per your plan you’ll need at least one double-digit mile run under your belt. Most plans have your last and longest run 2 to 3 weeks before the actual race (the tapering-down method), giving you time to rest and recover and save that energy for the big day.
TIp 3: No New Routines On Race Day
Don’t treat race day any differently from one of your training days. Eat the same food, at the same time. Wear your usual kit (no new trainers for the big day please!). Even small changes off your usual routine could throw you out of sync.
Tip 4: Enjoy it!
This isn’t a competitive race. It’s the Hackney Half with some of the most vibrant London streets and parks to keep your eyes entertained en route. You’ve done the hard work in training, now enjoy the fruits of your labour and head to a Hackney pub after, you deserve it!
The 13.1 Mile Route
You’ll be running down Mare Street through a carnival of sound, passing by the famous Town Hall and into popular Broadway Market, and then take in Hackney Wick, where the vibrant street art will give you a much needed boost! Explore Hackney’s beautiful green spaces including Haggerston Park and Hackney Downs. Your sightseeing journey continues as you’ll cross over twelve canals and rivers. Finally enjoy a panoramic view of the Olympic Park as you near the end of your half marathon. You deserve a beer or glass or red!
Don’t miss the special Hackney Marshes market with some of Hackney’s most exciting markets, breweries, galleries and start-ups in one big pop-up market! The Market on the Marshes is open all weekend, showcasing the best of local Hackney traders alongside top sport & lifestyle brands.
